A few days ago, Eden Café posted a link on twitter: Is sex becoming less or more a taboo?
I read the link and immediately, I was flooded with memories from my middle school years. My parents raised me in a household where sex was talked about openly. My mom wanted us to be armed with information and to own our sexuality. Such a blessing. When I discovered masturbation, I asked my friends if they did the same thing. I mean, who wouldn’t. My friends and I talked about everything from makeup to boys. Why wouldn’t sex be discussed.
The reaction was priceless. Blood flooded their cheeks and their gaze averted in twenty million directions – anywhere but at me. I pressed on and asked if anyone masturbated. Why not? It felt good. I found it funny because just moments ago we were talking about how the chocolate we were eating made us feel so GOOD, but we couldn’t talk about other things that made us feel good.
A friend of mine finally chimed in and threw a bucket of cold water on the conversation. She mentioned, “Real ladies don’t talk about that STUFF. It’s private. And you wait until you get married to do any of that STUFF”
Say what? Stuff? Are you serious? At least she was hitting in the right ballpark with the first letter ‘S’. It’s not ‘S’tuff. It’s ‘S’ex.
Here’s a snapshot of what followed after wards:
@AlynRosselini – In some areas you cannot utter the word ::whispers:: sex. In other areas you can stand on the rooftops and shout SEX!
@EdenCafe – Right? I long for the day we can talk about it wherever we want.
@AlynRosselini – You’re telling me! We should pair up and shout out all sorts of sex related words from the rooftops. You up for it?
@EdenCafe – Totally! God, how much fun would that be?!
So folks there you have it – an opportunity to shout whatever sex positive comment you want to from the rooftop! And don’t forget we are nearing the end of May – National Masturbation Month. Let’s go out with a bang, shall we?
We all own our sexuality for it is a large part of who we are. Sex propels us to do different things. For some, sex is the driving force behind certain motivations. For others, sex takes a back seat only to rear its beautiful head during certain occasions.
No matter what the reason behind the propelling – sex is an ever present force in our lives. Everywhere you look – in commercials, on TV, across the silver screen – there are elements of sex. Some messages are in your face while others are subtle.
It does not matter what your sexual orientation, religion, creed, race or anything else. No labels here because SEX IS what you make of it. If you’ve had any negative experiences, now is the time to own it. SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS what sex means to you.
Does sex mean:
- Power
- Control
- Games
- Empowerment

- Lust
- Desire
- Rose petals against your skin
- Liberation
- Monogamy

- Other
Eden Café and I ask you:
What does sex mean to you?
How do you feel about sex?
What is the message you want to share with the rest of the world?
The sky is the limit! If you want to be UNCENSORED and UNFILTERED, then do so! If you want to be a bit conservative, then do so.
And for those of you who are wondering about my friend who couldn’t say the word SEX. Because her parents failed to share important facts about unprotected sex, she ended up getting pregnant at 14. I wished her the best of luck and would have loved to remained friends with her, but she got sent away. However, this is for another post.
Do you guys have any questions? Insights? Opinions? Any resources you would like to recommend?
I want to hear you shout from the rooftops! And to prove it and show my appreciation, for the last week of May, everyone who leaves a detailed sex positive comment, I will put your name in my glass jar. If you comment and link back to my blog on your blog, you get your name in the glass jar twice. If you leave a comment, and link back to my blog, and mention Shout It From the Rooftop in your blog…you get your name in the hat THREE times. What do you win?
Love and Lust: A Sex Journal by Susie Bright ***I loved this journal so much, I bought another one just so I could give it to the winner***
I will pick a winner at the end of May.
Good luck!
